Can “Just Transition” fail to be a transition that is just? Definitely. What is needed is a national transition strategy that is just, in compliance with the Aarhus convention, respects everybody equally and supports everyone affected. That must begin immediately. Ultimately this lack of a coordinated, whole of society action is a gross injustice to the young people of Ireland, the world and future generations.

Ireland as a leader tackling Climate Change
You may think I need a psychiatric assessment when I say I am really excited about the fact that I have to write numerous submissions in the coming weeks. The Citizens’ Assembly is inviting members of the public, representative groups and citizen organisations to make submissions on the third topic they will consider ‘How the StateContinue reading “Ireland as a leader tackling Climate Change”
Proposal for Comprehensive Public Participation in Irelands National Energy Transition Plan
As some of you will know I have spent the past number of years advocating for the People’s Energy Charter request for comprehensive public participation in Ireland’s National Energy Transition Plan. A brief synopsis of the outcome is here and more in-depth report on my work is here. The questions everybody asks are “What isContinue reading “Proposal for Comprehensive Public Participation in Irelands National Energy Transition Plan”
Actions speak loudest
Why are public bodies supporting exclusive back door policy opportunities? Where are the rural voices in Irelands energy space? Where are the “energy citizens” and local authorities in energy planning? I recently attended the Energy & Climate Conference in Dublin Castle. This time I decided to see if I could encourage others from County ClareContinue reading “Actions speak loudest”
Submission to The Draft Consultation Principles/Guidance
Submission to The Draft Consultation Principles/Guidance To The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Mr. Brendan Howlin T.D The public have a right to participate and with that right comes responsibility. Unfortunately this responsibility may not be known, acknowledged, nurtured or facilitated. My experience has taught me that it very often takes a shock or a falseContinue reading “Submission to The Draft Consultation Principles/Guidance”
Up for the Game at Croke Park
Back in 1986 I dreamed of playing camogie with Ballyboden in Croke park. Little did I expect my big game to involve “a leading Irish law firm” at an energy conference in 2015 and my team to be the Environmental Pillar. For me, day two of the energy Ireland conference started at 6am. I wasContinue reading “Up for the Game at Croke Park”
Welcoming the debate and stakeholder engagement
This week I attended the Energy Ireland conference. Predictably my agenda was public participation. Almost as predictable is the fact that social or “public acceptance” in energy plans, policies and projects was a big issue throughout the two days with one afternoon workshop being dedicated to “stakeholder engagement”. It got off to a great start when aContinue reading “Welcoming the debate and stakeholder engagement”
Irish Wind Farmers Association Annual Workshop
Last week I heard that the Irish Wind Farmers Association – IWFA were hosting their annual workshop in Portlaoise so I asked if LEAF – Laois Environmental Action Forum, being the completely voluntary environmental forum in the host county, could have a couple of complimentary tickets so that some members may attend. It is alwaysContinue reading “Irish Wind Farmers Association Annual Workshop”
Public Participation and the Irish System
On Friday last April 4th I was part of a delegation from Open Government Partnership, OGP that met with officials from the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, DECLG. I wasn’t quite sure what the purpose of the meeting was only that the agenda was the Aarhus Convention and Citizen Engagement. Aarhus was pretty concise –Continue reading “Public Participation and the Irish System”
Comprehensive Public Participation
Another productive week 🙂 Yesterday, April 2nd 2014, the People’s Energy Charter got commitment from officials at the Department of Communications Energy and Natural Resources to work with us on a comprehensive public participation model for national energy policy consultations. It has the potential to be a pivotal meeting in Irish energy policy. There isContinue reading “Comprehensive Public Participation”
