Extinction Rebellion are protesting at the Strand Hotel in Limerick today, Wednesday Sept 21st and tomorrow Thursday. Limerick City & County council are hosting a Biodiversity conference there while giving the green light to toxic pollution in the county. Taken from the XR press release:
If the Limerick City and County Council do have concern for biodiversity then they must commission a review of the 700 page Environmental Impact Assessment Report on the expansion of Aughinish Alumina. The current EIAR claims that there is no adverse risk to biodiversity, yet in Hungary where a similar dam to the one at Aughinish burst resulted in massive death of wildlife, as well as human fatalities and injuries. A review of the level of risk posed by rockblasting and increasing the height of the bauxite residue to 44m, given increasing cases of tailing dam failures and increasing sea levels and heavy rainfall, is the least the people near the Shannon Estuary deserve.
