Imagine Science

Over the past 3 weeks we have had daily briefings about the pandemic, by the government. The nation has come to recognise the Chief Medical Officer over everyone else in these past weeks. We have an emergency. We have the scientist qualified in that field advising. We are being briefed by the experts in that area. Rightly so.

Tell me then, why do we have economists dominating the Climate Change Advisory Council? Why not climate scientists? If we had economists heading up the Covid19 response they might still be pricing personal protective equipment on the global markets, trying to get the best price. Or advising government that it’s too expensive to act so better to let thousands of people die. Pretty much what’s happening with the climate and biodiversity emergencies.

Imagine if we approached the climate and biodiversity emergencies as we are dealing with Covid19? Imagine if the scientists qualified to advise on the issues were front and centre stage? What if the public rallied behind the science, supported by the government? We cannot go back to business as usual. We must use the lessons of this pandemic to ensure we do not continue down the self destruct route we have been on.
